NY Rollerderby

Here's the second piece I did that Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant published on their videosite. It covers the final game of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby Championship. The fact that something as obscure as this can draw in a live audience of at least 1200 fired-up people is one of the reasons I enjoy living and working in this town.

Bubblemania

One day this summer I was on my bike heading towards a fancy grocery store to get my sick girlfriend some grub when I ran into a bunch of East Village and Delaware peaceniks who were setting Astor Place ablaze with the translucent haze of soap bubbles. Turns out it was an initiative of two students from Toronto who started an organization called newmindspace.
They set up events aiming to reclaim public spaces that have been taken over by the sinister likes of Starbucks and 3.25 million dollar condos. So stay on the lookout for any future happening that involve massive Easter egg hunts, urban capture the flag challenges and collective pillow fights...it's coming soon to a square or public park near you. Here's a little slice of reporting I did on the gig.
